One of Ana's friends lives right there, should've spoken to them in advance - there were only four toilets booked for the entire crowd. This, at a place that had seat rentals!
Honestly, the only thing that ultimately *did* stop me from dropping by their house and asking to let the kids (Ana and Deniz) use that toilet instead was the fact that it was their kid's bedtime, and I felt it was supremely unfair to him and his family to bring his friend over for five seconds right before bedtime. They're very polite people, and I suspect they'd never have said "NO, this is SO not cool, get out NOW."
Ana and Deniz got to go right up to the front at the beginning for exactly one piece. I'm pleased to note that they were *exceptionally* well-behaved - no talking, a very few extremely quiet whispers at exciting pieces during the music (which I firmly finger-on-lips shushed), and no real fidgets. But I didn't think it was fair to insist on this for the duration of the concert, so when the applause started, we went back to our spot - and the people immediately behind us in the front gave us a medium-sized, nearly-unopened box of expensive chocolates, because the kids were so well-behaved.
I'm not kidding.
Ana and Deniz didn't get any of the chocolate (so sorry!), but they were clearly pretty proud at the trust that they could sit up there "like grown-ups" and the reward. And I was proud too, y'know?
And then we wandered off with Meghan and chased fireflies all the way in the back where nobody cared, which I think was rather more fun for them (if less grown-up and proud-about-ness).
And the kids stuck it out all the way until the fireworks at the end. Another bit of pride - even though Ana was scared, she didn't flip out (despite it being really late). She just firmly told me that she wanted to go home. Now. So I picked her up and carried her away from the fireworks. Didn't get out of the park - she directed me instead under a very large tree, where she told me to sit, because she didn't want the fireworks landing on her head. And she was very brave through the whole thing, even though she was scared. Well, she's young, and I think this is the first time she'd seen them. I mean, we've talked about fireworks, but I don't think she anticipated what they were like, fully. Maybe she'll like them more as she gets older.
And no more concerts in the park until next summer! We'll sit even further back than we sat this time, I think - we ended up somewhere in the middle. Only good thing about in the middle is that it apparently was the best place to view fireworks from, which, for me, was a bust - I was in charge of the kid who didn't like them.
