Unlike the poster, I do *not* find this amusing.

Really, I think it's a horrible way to die. However, if, as the comments indicate, this is very common, it raises an important question.

Why haven't we duckling-proofed our sewer grates yet?

Or our pool filters? I've had to pull out tiny little bodies that have gotten sucked into our pool filter. Not nice.

They might even be dead before they get sucked in.
Ducklings drown if they don't have a very low surface to climb up onto.

I'm so glad I knew that before I ever got ducklings.

So do puppies. Luckily we heard ours splashing in time. (Every time. He must have fallen in about 9 or 10 times before he got big enough to drag himself out.)

I'm glad you heard him. That'd be so sad.

Yeah. But he's a big dog now, and quite happily dives in to cool off after a walk.

Yes, but quite often we'd forget to close the fence properly. Which is a notgood thing.

We used to have a poodle. Never jumped in, but every time he'd fall in he'd sink like a stone-- no joke. Luckily he wasn't a very heavy dog (60 pounds) but man.

And these used to be the water retrievers of choice?

That image has been around for a while. It's photoshopped.

Me neither.

Old meme. The pictures are real, not photoshopped as many people insist they are. However, the ducklings were rescued and reuinted with the mama duck. The photographer was not totally heartless.

Plus, I'd find that an obnoxious thing for me to discover by cane. Of course, most blind people use a method that would prevent that from being a huge problem, but I compromise for support. But it'd also be a nuisance for someone in high heeled shoes.

Most grates I see are more grated than that.

Oh and I found it both horrific and funny. I laughed, but it also hurt me to see it. I dislike needless death and pain.

I don't think it's funny either. It was especially not funny when a girl from my floor printed out this image a few months ago, wrote "Bad Parenting" across the top of it and taped it to her door.
WOW!

Are those gaps even big enough for them to slip down through? Looks like it'd be a tight squeeze, not just a PLUNK, baby in the sewer type thing.
