Oh, hey, I have a question.

Despite my shortage of CDs (not that short a shortage, I just don't know where they are, and they're all my mom's anyway), I do have a lot of tapes. Which I haven't listened to since my tape player disappeared or died or whatever it did.

Is there a way (even an expensive way, since I'm just being all theoretical here) to transfer tapes to CD?

Unless you have a friend in proaudio who has gear to assist, maybe something like this will work for you?

Of course, I assume that once you have them stored digitally, you would just burn yourself a CD. :-)

What's the point of having free space if you don't plan to use it?

You're clearly completely crazy! no sane person can make that much sense.

I have a CD-burner that can convert tapes to CDs.

[identity profile] neurotica0.livejournal.com 2005-05-13 12:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I won it at a party 3 years ago, so it was free to me. But I think at the time, it cost $300. Of course, it wouldn't be that expensive now, with computer CD-burning.

No, I don't live near you (Oklahoma) so my comment was not especially helpful unless you want to ship tapes to me.

Also, it's not even as if you could buy this CD burner and necesarily have it do this. It works in this way because it can take information from my bf's stereo. Which plays tapes. The burner itself does not have a place for tapes.

Okay, yah, so I've just proved that my comment was, on the whole, not helpful at all.

But it was, in the end, kind of funny. :-)

If you have something to play the tapes on, or can borrow one, you can get a special cable that you can hook up to the computer and transfer the songs to your computer. Then you can burn them to CD.

O hey!

My dad's doing that with laserdiscs.

All ou need is the playing device, a supercool TV, and a recording device.

I'll have to ask him about it.

[identity profile] lakidaa.livejournal.com 2005-05-13 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
aha. Turns out you need a device called a Set-Top Box.

Brilliant question! This is something I've been meaning to find out about for ages. I've got all kinds of great rare tapes that I'm afraid to listen to too much, because I know how quickly they'll wear out.

All you need is a tape deck (preferably a decent one) that has L/R audio output (the red and white cables), a converter cable to go into the computer, like <a href="http://www.jr.com/JRProductPage.process?Product=3695196>so</a>, and audio recording software, for example Peak (Mac) or Adobe Audition (PC). I do it all the time and it's very easy once you get everything hooked up.
