Gah. [personal profile] mhari summed it up.

Bashing furries just for being furries isn't funny. It doesn't even make sense. So, people get off on the hott furry sexx (this seems to be the majority of the furry-bashing, so it doesn't really matter if it's true or not). Who cares? Would you attack somebody for another sexual interest that's completely consensual? Why on earth are you prying into their lives? Nobody's forcing you to convert to furry-dom. You're not being harmed by anybody else's group identity, you're not being attacked, so, please stop talking about it.

Or at least make your furry-bashing-argument reasonable. OMG! UR A FURRY! UR AN IDIOT AND UNDERSTAND NOTHING! isn't reasonable. OMG! UR A FURRY! UR A PURV! may be reasonable, though I don't see how it's anybody's business. Anything else... I don't see why it should come up.

Okay, now that this is over with, I gotta say I've never understood the point of furry-ness. I'm sure that now that I've posted this, somebody will show up to explain it so I can be enlightened.

I'm going to throw my hands up and say "me too" to the last line. I just don't get it (unless it's Aramis from Dogtanian, because - well, he's a Musketeer so it's OK).

I will also mock them in the second way, but not if it's going to cause offense. I mock gay men because they have teh ButtSechs too, and I think that's as icky as dressing up as an animal for sex. I'm indiscriminate about who I laugh at. I respect evceryone's right to do what they want in a consensual adult environment, of course :)

But... yeah OMG UR A FURRY AND STOOPID! is the most retarded thing I've read all morning. But it's only half ten and I haven't had my fill of fundy message boards yet.

Also, I have to add, that that thread's the first time I've randomly come across someone on LJ using one of my icons.
That's your community what done that, thank you *hugs*

The point of furry-ness.

[identity profile] joeymew.livejournal.com 2005-01-10 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure I qualify for the non-fetish side of furrydom, so I can't speak for the types that give the whole fandom a creepyness. But from my personal experience it's about characters. Sort of like getting attached to charcters in a book. That's how I got into it. As for fursonas (ones own personal furry character, in case you haven't heard the term,) most people have them for Role Playing purposes I think. It's a bit of yourself that you've given form. There's also the whole art thing, furries are pretty fun to draw, and there's some really amazing art out there. As far as fursuiting goes (in a non-sexual way) I've heard it's just the fun of dressing up and hiding your identity. You can bring joy to little kids and just be able to act in a way that you normally would be frowned upon for. I don't actually own a fursuit or anything, but I've met a lot of people who do that type of thing.

Someone can probably explain it better then me, sorry if my explaination is all jumpy and scatterbrained.

From the furries I know:
1) MOST of them don't do it for the hott furr sexx0r.
2) It's about as "kinky" as cosplay and fan fic.
3) Like cosplay and fan fic, I don't really "get it," but I understand generally why someone would do it-- it's just not my particular interest.

[identity profile] amarafox.livejournal.com 2005-01-10 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
How long do you think it will take for some Goon or troll to comein here and go 'OMG U r a furry sympathizer! u will burn in helll!'?

[identity profile] xxrosencrantzxx.livejournal.com 2005-01-10 10:01 am (UTC)(link)
I'm a goon. :D

But I'm not going to bash furries on the internet for no reason. Not all goons are bad!

Seconded. I know little bits and pieces, but I'd like to hear a definition that isn't tainted by ignorance (I thought furries were people who had sex in animal costumes, but see? That's ignorance).

So it may as well be me.

For most of use who ARE into it, big time, it's because we have an intense need to reject our own humanity.
In all the cases where people are able to articulate this, it comes from a combination of childhood sexual abuse and lonliness. For both myself and my partner, cats were as important or more important to us then humans during our childhood. For us it's not ABOUT getting dressed up in fuir suits and fucking, not in australia it's to @#$%^& hot to do that. It more acknowledgement that sometimes we need to give and recieve affection in a different fashion to that in which a normal human might.

[identity profile] cumaeansibyl.livejournal.com 2005-01-10 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I hardly ever waste the energy to attack someone in a serious fashion, but I do reserve the right to make fun of people for having sex in mascot costumes, because it's silly. Not that all sex isn't silly, but you know what I mean.

On a slightly connected note, CSI once did an episode based around this very thing Fur and Loathing (http://www.tvtome.com/tvtome/servlet/GuidePageServlet/showid-19/epid-273258/)

And a quote from said episode:

Gil Grissom: Freud said that the only unusual sexual behavior was not to have any at all. After that, it was only a matter of opportunity and preference. Some people obviously prefer the feel of fur to the texture of human skin.
Catherine Willows: Well, I like a hairy chest, but that doesn't mean I'm going to go bop a six-foot weasel.
