*screams*

Mr and Mrs Ainscow's daughter, aged 33, has Asperger's syndrome, which caused her to spend her parents' cash wildly on expensive shoes, clothes and meals.

No, it really didn't. Her parents giving her the money, and not telling her to knock it off, and letting her be a little brat... that is what caused her to spend the money. The original article said she had AS, and was bipolar, and a host of other things, but now it's all gone but the Asperger's? And now, even though the woman (the daughter) is saying that's not true, she has "no mental health problems", the article just says "she has Asperger's", not "her mother says she has Asperger's", which is just a bit unfair, don't you think?

Parents...never wanting to take the blame for anything. Do you mind if I add you?

My friend Scot has bipolar disorder, and has gone to jail for writing obscene amounts of bad checks.

I think his disorder contributes to the problem, but he's also the kind of person who likes to milk his bipolar disorder for all it's worth.

I'm not sure if compulsive spending is so much a symptom as distorted thinking and poor impulse control is... and both of those lead to the spending...? Hmm. Yes, it could definitely be related to the bipolar, but it's utterly silly of her parents to allow her access to enough money to spend a problematic amount.

don't you know?

Asperger's is the Disease of the Moment!

Remember when ADD/ADHD was?

Thing is, in the UK it's not. At least, not that I can tell.

[identity profile] lakidaa.livejournal.com 2004-11-26 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
it is in the US, I believe.

Recent stories have had it as the disease that caused the actions.

Lemme guess, the story happened in the UK, and I didn't read close enough.

It did indeed. At least, assuming it's the same one that's cropped up twice before.
