Well, this is cheery news...

The WHO is predicting a flu pandemic within the next few years.

No, getting that shot won't help, so don't bother. The best way to avoid a disease like this is: 1. wash your hands often 2. stay away from sick people 3. wash your hands MORE often and 4. invest in a surgical mask or better.

And if you die, well, best wishes.

Hey, you, AIM?

[identity profile] push-the-limits.livejournal.com 2004-11-25 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Well that's comforting, seeing as how I come in contact with at least 600 people every day, and am only let out of my check stand to wash my hands every 2 hours.

But really...how is this any different from SARS? What ever happened to that, anyway? And the anthrax and smallpox?

I'm reminded of the story of the boy who cried "wolf."

Guess it's bad I put my fingers in my eyes constantly, eh?

And that I chew on pens that I find on the ground ...

Oh man, me too. I have this thing where if I'm thinking, anything in my hand will find its way to between my molars.

If I wore gloves while checking groceries, people would think I was some kind of freak. I can carry hand sanitizer, though.

I just think the media, as always, is trying to scare us. It seems like every time there is a warning of some outbreak, epicemic or terrorist threat, everyone panics, and nothing happens.

*epidemic*, too.

Hand sanitizer is a good thing, then :)

That's what drove me insane-- this girl with a minor case of the flu sat next to me at dinner (she's a pseudo friend) and wouldn't stop touching me and going on and on about how she was sick. I was like "hello! Does it look like I want the flu!? Back awaaaaay."

Avoiding people who are sick is not easy work, I tell you.

Yeah, and it seems those sneaky germs are most contagious before they've even caused symptoms. Take chicken pox for example...you're contagious when you have a fever...but by the time you notice you've broken out in the sores, it's too late.

For me, avoiding sick people is IMPOSSIBLE. I have one kid in public school, and one in a daycare center, and I work at a grocery store. I'm doomed. Heh.
