This is all fairly common sense stuff that I've grown up with all my life - but yes, the American Church at large tends to pay very little real attention to this issue.
My pastor here did give a great sermon yesterday on money (he's working on the 7 deadly sins. It's some of the best stuff I've ever heard). Ironically, I choose that Sunday to not put anything in the offering plate... I'm a bad man, I know.
It accords with what I've been saying for years--contributing to charity or donating anything, then writing it off on your tax return, does not count as charity.
It has become a bare business transaction, and he has said unto you, "They have their reward."
I've hung around too many Jewish people. It's a way of strictly following the commandment about taking the Lord's name in vain. I really don't give a, but it allows me to adopt a holier-than-thou attitude when talking to certain people... And it's a bad habit of mine, even when I'm talking to people I like/respect.
