There are people who are offense kleptomaniacs.

Have you tried filling it about a quarter with hot water with a bit of detergent and giving it a very good shake?

Also, are you letting it dry out when not in use?

(because that kind of slime suggests it's never dry)

The article on the Hobo handbook is interesting, but I think the writer missed one point.

"The swearing-in ceremony typifies the central tension of the train-hopping community. The irony of anarchists imposing a structure on the clutter of the information age is apparently lost on the propagators and protectors of the Guide. These are people who preach the porousness of private property while guarding the gates of their church."

It's not so much about copyright, as keeping it out of the hands of the 'enemy'.

It's also a kind of initiation into the culture.

Loved the post about the French Art Spy. It's nice to see women's contributions to the war effort published.

Particularly lesbians.

Denture-cleaning tablets are often good for cleaning enclosed spaces. Fill with water, drop in several tablets, wait a few hours, then rinse.

I've found that filling it with a half and half mix of water and vinegar, and leaving it overnight, works quite well. Then rinse it out thoroughly with warm water and see if you can "hang" it upside down to dry out completely before putting the cap back on. If that doesn't do it, repeat, and maybe add a dash of bleach to the mix?

This was my thought, just don't add vinegar and bleach simultaneously. Also, if the bleach is left there, it may start to degrade the rubber.

Good point -- rubbing alcohol maybe? But the vinegar should work on its own.

Yeah, rubbing alcohol would work, too, but I agree, a good vinegar soak should be sufficient!

I've never cleaned a hot water bottle, but I do leave them open to dry between uses and for a very long time (many days) before storing them.

the ones I used always had a small hole near the bottom in a 'tail', so you could easily hang them upsidedown.

I see that some modern ones still do. Makes it much easier to drain them when not in use and then put them away dry.

Mine has that hole too; it just never occurred to me to make use of it!
