Okay, I *know* none of you would do this...

But just in case, this is my normal rant about l337 and chtspk.

Please remember that some people use textreaders. Some textreaders are very old and can't even translate ALL CAPS. I don't think any can correctly translate l337. Since you're online, you have no way of knowing which of your friends are blind, or dyslexic, or think that the technology is just oh so cool.

Please remember that other people aren't native speakers of English or have other problems reading nonstandard spelling.

Please remember that l337 and chtspk make you look really, really stupid and/or ignorant.

Please remember that it is fucking rude to type lIk Dys. Don't. Ever.

Thank you.

I think it's beyond rude to ~*~*//**TyP lYk d3eS||||\\\**((* too! And not just because of text readers: because it is almost physically painful for me to have to deciper that barely intelligible crap. Not to mention that when I see someone typing like that (besides joking or imitating that typing), there is no way I can possibly see the person as being intelligent.

And I simply avoid/ignore them. I have no patience and no time for people who 1337-sp33k.

What is llk Dys? Oh, and also.. are textreaders that common? I'm just curious, I would think most people using textreaders would go to actual information sites rather than hanging around livejournal... you don't use a textreader, do you?

[identity profile] maladaptive.livejournal.com 2004-09-02 05:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I know several blind people on livejournal, actually. Maybe not "I can't see a damn thing" blind, but legally so. So textreaders may not be that common, but they're out there.

[identity profile] meteorie.livejournal.com 2004-09-03 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, okay. I had no idea, really.. sorry for being so ignorant ^^

[identity profile] maladaptive.livejournal.com 2004-09-03 03:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Not ignorant at all. When I found out one of my friends was blind my jaw well near hit the floor!

[identity profile] codeman38.livejournal.com 2004-09-02 05:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Uhh... I think the members of [livejournal.com profile] blindpeople would probably dispute that. :-)

Oh, forget it.. this is what I get for trying to squeeze in one last comment before the network shuts off at 10:50 and after I've taken about three exams in one day. I had no idea about legally blind people on lj, okay? It's just not something that I really ever thought about. So, I'm sorry.

Yep.. I have probably failed more quizzes this week then in my entire life (it doesn't help that my school doesn't have Ds, anything below 70% is an F), oh well, it's what I get for taking nearly all college classes. Anyway, thanks :)

An example of just how bad netspeak can be...

...Can anybody actually read that?! It might as well be in a foreign language-- I'd probably find it equally comprehensible, if not more!

If you love this guy a lot, but, for example, he's a goth and you're a prep, dont be goth/punk for him - be yourself. He'll like you more than when he can tell you're not being yourself. Trust me on this - the guy I love (and always will) said he didnt like my personality, and it was because I wasn't being myself; otherwise it would have worked. So take this advice and use it. I'm also an advice-giver on my AIM, screen-name rainbowchic903"

... I think chtspk sounds dumb, but it's just teenage slang, which always sounds dumb and annoying to adults. It's supposed to be incomprehensible to those outside the "in-group"; that's its purpose.

What's really pathetic is adults who adopt it to try to look cool, but instead end up looking like immature idiots to other adults, and like loser wanna-be's to the kids. Teen slang is for teens, and it is properly spoken by them only to other teens; any other usage of it is self-defeating.

[identity profile] codeman38.livejournal.com 2004-09-03 07:01 am (UTC)(link)
...Whoa. How did you manage to make heads or tails of that? I probably could given enough time, but it would take far longer than is necessary... why couldn't they just write it out normally to begin with? >_<

And this is for someone with English as a native language. If English isn't your primary language, it'll only be worse...

[identity profile] codeman38.livejournal.com 2004-09-03 07:07 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, come to think of it, I think what makes it even harder for me to read isn't so much the netspeak as it is the utter lack of punctuation. I have trouble reading properly spelled English when it's written as one long run-on sentence...

[identity profile] fjorab-teke.livejournal.com 2004-09-02 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Ummm...I feel kind of bad now, seeing as I joked about a "1337" thing and got excited and typed a sentence or two in all caps.

Oops. :-X Oh yes, I make sideways smileys too, which is probably no better.

[identity profile] fjorab-teke.livejournal.com 2004-09-02 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
These people are in COLLEGE? How do they decipher their class notes if they decide to use an even more exaggerated style of shorthand? My class notes were gibberish enough w/ standard shortcuts. I'd really hate to actually write or type or speak like that! Yikes!

(heehee, effective use of caps there I suppose?)

[identity profile] fjorab-teke.livejournal.com 2004-09-02 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh geez! If it's worth the laugh, post away. ;-) You and I both have had our share of run-ins with that kind of typing. It may be a mild form of it, but I utterly cringed when someone sent me an email titled "ur trade list." Her typing wasn't terrible, but the chtspk in even its mild form just made me shake my head.
