Coronavirus: Trump to defy 'voluntary' advice for Americans to wear masks

JFC.

Listen. Trump has two jobs. Head of government, and head of state. I'm not going to even comment on how he's doing as head of government, but as head of state he has one responsibility in this crisis, and that's to wear the damn mask. Head of state means being a good sport, setting a good example, and occasionally wearing silly clothes. In a monarchy, you wear a funny hat on state occasions. During a pandemic, you wear a surgical mask and pretend you like it.

Just suck it up and do it.

He's as big a fuckup at head of state as he is at his other job. At least with monarchies, I get to look at pretty clothes, nicely tailored uniforms, and massive bling. The rest of his family also suck at this when they are not grifting.

No one, not even an army, could stuff that man's ego into a mask.

Faithfully executing his Master's plan to get Americans to tear their country apart and kill themselves.

Why can't anyone remember their oath to uphold the Constitution and the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic?

Because this crew, as selected by and for the Trump, never believed the oath was worth anything to them or anyone else to heed in the first place. It's just words, words, words for suckers to be strangled with to them.

And with our luck, he won't even die from it, she says with the bleakest of humor.

Do keep in mind that if Trump dies, we get Pence. And going down the line of succession, it doesn't get much better.

I think Pelosi's down there somewhere, and while I'm... ambivalent... about her in general, she'd probably do a better job than the rest of this mess.

Honestly, there's a chance even Pence might rather be seen to be Doing What The Experts Say, since otherwise his church-packing base is going to be pneumonia toast.

Pelosi is immediately after Pence. She wouldn't be any worse at it than Biden.

too bad Warren already dropped out. But it gives her more time to GET SHIT DONE, at least.

*nodnodnods* re Pelosi. (I wasn't sure if there'd been some rearrangement that would go through McConnell or something (ugh!), and didn't have the spoons to double-check.)

amen, so much amen.

The Republicans haven't been able to twist the US Constitution in that way. They'd theoretically still need a Convention to rewrite it to do that, and they don't have the numbers in Congress or among the states' governors right now. Some of my friends are scared of how close the US is right now to the Republicans getting either of those numbers. 2018 was progress in a better direction, but more remains to be done.

If Trump dies, even if it's from something less controversial, he becomes a martyr. Don't want that.

Right. Better he live to do a perp-walk to Leavenworth or the like.

Of course he won't do it. Because he doesn't appear to actually believe the virus is real and a real threat. I swear that the thing that will get him to take it seriously is if his preferred cable channel starts saying nonstop that his reelection campaign is ranking because he's not taking this seriously enough. Or something that makes it clear that something actually important to him will suffer if he continues to fuck this up.

I'm still laughing at the Borowitz Report on how someone should tell Trump that the coronavirus will affect his TV ratings because dead people watch less TV than live ones.

Perhaps it is rally attendance that can get him to pay attention, since he so enjoys getting crowds to chant things.

"Trump has two jobs. Head of government, and head of state."

Good observation. As the President is both, most Americans can't tell the difference. It's so irritating when an American describes some country's prime minister as head of state.

I like the way you dream.

But we both know that dreams actually Take work to come true, and that kind of work is not on the docket of the Trump Administration.

He can't handle being made fun of, that's partly why he demolished everything Obama did because he was laughed at at the WH Correspondent's Dinner. He won't do it, it ruins what he thinks his image is.
