My mother got a fruit basket from her office

And this might sound ungrateful, but I wish they'd asked before picking, because they chose one that contains six pears and two Gala apples. And nobody in this family likes pears, and the only person who is passionate about apples only eats Granny Smiths. (That's Eva. I mean, I enjoy Jonagolds and Honeycrisp and Winesaps, but Gala? Sigh.)

I can find ways to use the apples, I suppose, but what am I going to do with six pears? Maybe I'll call the food bank on the corner, ask if they can use them on Saturday. Don't know what they'll do with six pears either, they certainly get more than six families every week.

Perhaps put them in an apple & pear crumble? I don't like pears, but cooked in sugar they pretty much don't taste pear-y.

Ah, discriminating taste buds. It was just a thought.

I have this great recipe for a spicy-tangy-sweet pear and chicken stew. [oven, slow cooker] I have no idea if someone who doesn't like pears would like it. I think it's delicious, and I don't generally think pears are tasty enough to trouble with, though I will happily eat them baked into pastry.

It's great over oat bread toast, as a kind of open-face sandwich, or on egg noodles.

ETA: I also somewhere have a recipe for pears poached in wine and spices.

Think of them as a vegetable rather than a fruit. Six isn't enough to do chutney,  but they'd work in a salad with walnuts and blue cheese. Or simmered down into a sauce to go with roast poultry of some sort. Baked into a cake. Made into a smoothie. Sliced and made into pie.  Mix the pears and apples, make crumble.

How about a soup? Pass them through a sieve and the texture is a thing of the past. Works great with celeriac.
Same about apple-pear-sauce. Like applesauce, only with, you know, pears mixed in? That'd also take care of the Gala apples.

I clearly am. As I love pears, I find it hard to fathom any antipathy towards them, let alone any deep antipathy. ;)
