"We think the biblical concept of marriage is important and people should take a stand on that side of the argument as well as the one that's in the media right now."

What exactly DOES the Bible say about marriage? Not just the snarky replies like "the Bible supports polygamy" and "the Bible supports rapists" but stuff that's actually relevant. Or is any of it relevant at all in a secular state?

Dunno, because I've never wanted to read the bible. But I don't want someone elses bible forced on me when I want to marry someone. I really can't understand the way anti-same-sex-marriage people think. It's not like they're being forced to marry someone of the same sex. Non of the people I've talked to have been able to explain it sensibly, it's always, "I feel strongly against it because of my religion."

Personally I don't think marriage should be controlled by the government period. Let everyone get civil union papers and then they can get married by their religious affiliation. That seperates the church from the state and would save EVERYONE a whole lot of headaches.

No.

Now if we could just hammer into the skulls of right-wing nutjobs that this is NOT a "Christian country"--

But in other news, no. The Bible really doesn't say anything about gay marriage. In fact it really doesn't say anything about gays at all.

It sort of does and sort of doesn't say something about gay people. It talks about people giving up their "natural" desires and "burning" for people of their own gender. In some of Paul's letters it lists a whole bunch of people who won't go to heaven and "homsexuals" are included, but since there was no such word as "homosexual" when Paul was writing those letters, you can't say with 100 percent certainty what he actually wrote. And of course there's the Leviticus laws, which say that men who lie with men will be put to death, but you could also be put to death for eating shellfish, so it's hard to take that "law" seriously.

The Bible says something to the effect of (paraphrased, 'cause this is from the dark recesses of my memory): "For this reason a man will leave his mother and a woman will leave her parents home and the two shall become one person."

actually, it says almost NOTHING about marriage. basically it talks something along the lines of "and he lay with her, and knew her, and she was his wife". hm, wonder how many times i've been married under that. :)
