The only financial news I've read in the last few months that's reassured me somewhat was the news report I read today that said people who got their tax returns through direct deposit and those whose Social Security numbers end in low digits (for example, 03 or 05) should get their rebates bright and early. I'm both, so I should have mine by May 2, according to the article. \o/
I think it's only supposed to be a two week difference between the beginning and end of the doling out of the direct deposit rebates. So as long as you had your tax return direct deposited, I think it should be there by the 16th (although don't quote me on that). And then after that they're sending out the paper ones.
As far as I know, they're based on the ones for last year, the ones we all just filed. That's why they made a big deal about making sure you got them in on time.
This CNN video (http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/business/2008/03/18/delacruz.irs.checks.cnn) was the most recent thing I've seen -- it tells you how you can find out how big your check will be.
well, frankly hell yes. lets be ubar blunt here. 5 years ago when i predicted an ubereconomic downturn by 2010 i was doing so on the skyrocketing price of oil ALONE. I'd honestly thaught the oil spike would have supressed the golbal economy by now, becasue if a self educated hack could work out the dangers of unrestricted lending then so could the business graduates in charge of dolling out the bucks. Apparently, i was completly, totaly, INSANELY wrong. It;s actualy pritty dificult to get my head arround just how wrong I was. But seing the write down on Bearn Stienes nails it home. If a bank can drop to 1/4 of its list value in 3 days, we are in for som very "intersting times" economicaly indeed. Days like this i give thanks for my government job
Yeah, I was just having a discussion with my husband about it, and it was one of those discussions that included "let's ask the Mormons for stockpiling tips" and "maybe we should buy a gun."
Now I think that's probably a little paranoid, since I don't think we're going to have marauding hordes of looters in the suburbs of Kalamazoo even at the worst of things, but you know, we're worried, of course we're worried. I'm a rank amateur at this sort of thing but even I can tell that something's very wrong with our economy, propped up as it is by easy credit and insane loan terms.
lol, that's us, too. We're planning a garden (we would have anyway) but we're working as hard and as fast as we can to get out of debt so that if the worst does happen we won't have debt to deal with, too. I've been considering stockpiling - mostly because every time I go to the store I have to pay 10 cents more an item - and if I buy it now, then when it's gone from $1 to $2 I'll still have it at $1. Ish.
Only thing that really surprises me in that article is the mention of the homeless being able to "sell" their plasma. (I thought blood stocks were a matter of donation since the AIDS/hepatitis scares?) But yes, I've been hearing similar predictions for ages, and seeing them inch closer to reality gives me no joy at all. Some of the comments to that article are REALLY scary, such as the one about foreclosures.
