So, I have a copy of HP6 I'm reading right now...

No spoilers here, just gratuitious comments on Jo's writing.

In many ways, I prefer it to her earlier books. Less repetitive adjectives to drive me batty. But I still think she could use a lesson in the importance of serious editing. Her description is generally good, but it can drag on for a bit. For example, with the first paragraph, I read it, but I almost gave up there because it kept rearranging itself in my mind to the first paragraph from Paul Clifford.

You know the one, the one that starts: "It was a dark and stormy night; the rain fell in torrents--except at occasional intervals, when it was checked by a violent gust of wind which swept up the streets (for it is in London that our scene lies), rattling along the housetops, and fiercely agitating the scanty flame of the lamps that struggled against the darkness."

Yeah. Not an auspicious beginning.

It does get better, though, so I'm not complaining. Much. Really, though, I suspect all these books would be better if she hadn't gotten so popular. Her popularity is a good thing in that it allows writers to get away with slightly longer books than used to be the norm, but... not all writers can pull off these longer books. Certain parties need to learn how to rein in a story just a bit. Not just JKR. I could use that lesson, I just go on and on and on and tangent....

Anyway, back to reading. Good night all, good work, I'll most likely spoil you in the morning.

First waspishly sighting is about halfway through the book, during the first visit to Hogsmeade. I screamed out loud before I realized what I was doing. Oops. It really wasn't that big a deal, considering I'm halfway through the book and just now noticing that word, but I guess it's been on my mind....

Wow, you guys were right. This is a very slashy book. I'm starting to actually believe in Harry/Draco.

Oh, and I think I like young-Snape. Ram a bezoar down their throat indeed! *makes approving noises*

I agree with Rah. Snape's going to be revealed to have been carrying out an insanely ornate plan of Dumbledore's the whole time. And I'll go a step further. Despite JKR's claims to the contrary, by the end of book 7, Draco's going to have seen the light. Possibly he'll have stepped into it, and we'll never see his like again.

Hey, if you spoil us in the morning, can you put it behind a cut tag? It's just that I know that I'm not going to be finished by tomorrow, and I really don't want to get spoiled.

I'm pretty sure you're up on your spoiler etiquette, but I just wanted to make sure.

Yanno, I don't *get* slash at all, and quite frankly, I don't LIKE it, and so maybe that's why, but I see NO REASON to think this is a "slashy" book.

I didn't find that particularly "slashy", and quite honestly, if I saw slash written from that, I think I would be very disturbed. Like, SIGNIFICANTLY moreso than normal. That would just be abuse.

It's really hard to comment without reading your entry (I'm only on ch. 7)! But in any case, the first sentence is verbatim from Edward Bulwer-Lytton's Paul Clifford (1830), the source of all the "dark and stormy night" jokes, not to mention the Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest (http://www.bulwer-lytton.com/), devoted to finding the absolute worst first lines ever.

I can't decide if I'm amused by it or not. (I mean, by JKR's use of it. Not by the sentence, the sentence is awful.)

Hmm, I thought I'd checked it against the original. Then again moving has me rather brain-dead, so I could be mistaken.

Completely agree on the Snape thing. If it's not an ornate plan, Dumbledore was playing chess, and had to sacrifice himself at that point.
