Not everyone can, but it's fun to try to learn. Or you could crochet, which I find to be easier. (Only one stitch to keep track of, hee.)

...But it took at least forty hours of work and eighty hours of yarn...

when I get really bored I do long division. When I get really really bored, I do it without paper by just drawing the numbers with my finger on the floor and hoping that I can remember what was where.
