Wouldn't that make renting out dvds difficult?

If they do something like this, I'll be annoyed, because I already have a dvd player and some dvds, but I'd just stop buying DVDs and wouldn't get a new player.

On a side note, whenever I see things about biometric data as proof, I get uncomfortable. They're saying iris scan, not retinal scan, and I really have no idea what mine would be like... but it kind of sucks to not only have a health problem, but also lose access to things because of it. They used to have these ads on television saying things like: Ever open your front door, just by talking? You will. And show a voice identification system... and people would say things like: Ever been locked out of your house, just because you caught a cold? You will. And I feel that way about eye scans and finger prints too. Sure they don't normally change. But one of my retinas changed drastically. And I did some temporary damage to one of my fingerprints once by stupidly connecting two wires that I really shouldn't have connected by hand.

Yeah, I think Netflix (et al.) would have some negative feedback for this.

Would that mean I wouldn't be able to watch DVDs on my PS2? Because then I'd be screwed.

I'm sorry, but how many people do they really expect are going to go out and buy whole new DVD players just for this nuisance? Come on.

Two(ish) words: V-chip. Doesn't matter what consumers want to buy if the government mandates what they must buy.

If they're going to pay someone to research to develop things like this, why don't they just pay someone to research how to make the fact that people like to download movies work for them? It can't be harder than this, can it?

Seriously, this has got to be the biggest damn wank of all time. Who would fund the retail outlet side of things, retailers? So what happens if hte wrong disk gets inserted an dloaded? how about faulty disks? How about the extra staffing, time spent in cues, and the 100% garuntee that someone (probably chinese, and probably much cheaper than the brand name MPAA endorced ones) will simply release a player that reads the disk and ignores the embedded chip. How about the lack of backwards compatability in this technology. Mailorder businesses? Gifts?

Someone should tell this guy's funders just how impossible this is IRL. Micropayment pay per view on demand is much more realistic, and one fuck of a lot easier to secure, and with technology like the PSP now readily available, even easy to impliment on the move.

Fuck this. I just brought a damn DVD player to get with the times. I'm going to get my VCR back.
