Okay, WTF is with the "ranking" system in this Neopets war?

I know they say they want to make things fair, but... if they're going to pull this sort of thing, what's the point of training?

Higher ranks apparently do win more points. I heard they rank according to your pet level (which is dumb because lab ray pets have low levels and high stats). Yeah, this war was definitely not thought out.
