The military has been doing that for at least 15 years that I can say I have fairly reliable information on...the lying to get in.

True, but it's usually not quite as blatant as telling a potential recruit to get a fake diploma.

You could always educate a person, a diploma doesn't mean one is smart or stupid.

But letting people in with drug problems, I think that's a bigger problem.

Maybe I'm biased seeing the trouble with drug users in the military -- I wonder what it would be like now with the people I knew THEN (as a dependent). They let my ex in, for example, and that was a disaster and a waste, I knew someone else thrown out, who was a drug user that got in, and there were suicide attempts and mental hospital stays and just LOTS of fun stuff with those who went in that I knew who were drug users, and a number admitted that they were told to lie. Or they'd mention drugs and the recruiter would say things like "I'm sorry, I didnt hear you, did you say something?" things like that.

On a different note: vindication (http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20050430/hl_nm/epidural_labor_dc)

I'm keeping up to date on the Air Force Academy story. They can't seem to win for losing ... *shakes head* but it doesn't surprise me that they're having a problem with this. Pam Zubeck ran a similar article (http://www.gazette.com/display.php?id=1307295&secid=1) in the Gazette.

I have two sons, 20 and 21, so we get calls from the Army recruiters a lot. Now realize, I was/am married to a squid so I have no problems at all with military service, but not during a war, not enlisted, not in the army. I have asked we be taken off any call lists but they don't so I've went from polite to downright rude.
Army recruiter calls. I say, "Let this be your guide, Call us back when out of Iraq." He says that the war is almost over and they are sending guys home, I asked if Bush knew this?
