Child pornography was a topic that came up a lot on IRC. People would want Opers to crack down on it. We tried to explain that we couldn't do that, because a) we couldn't identify child porn without seeking it out, which is illegal to do and being a vigilante isn't a good excuse and b) you never know if you're actually disrupting an important investigation and you don't want to get in the way of law enforcement. So, we'd tell people, we will cooperate with legal authorities in any way they ask of us, but we can't do their job for them. Plus, keeping the pictures from being exchanged isn't what gets the kids to safety, and it's getting the kids to safety that matters.
Anyhow, so it's a subject I've given an unpleasant amount of thought to.
I'm just glad there are people working to help children who are being abused.
