So, somebody posted an ad in [community profile] book_icons

We have what I consider a fairly liberal attitude towards ads. They're allowed, so long as they're 1. unobtrusive and 2. in a nominally on-topic post (add one icon and you can post your ad).

Bad enough that the post wasn't on-topic, but the poster included the Words of Doom...

"I don't know if this is okay".

I hate that phrase. I utterly loathe it. We have rules! We have a nice nifty list that I killed myself writing! It's clear, it's fair, it's not exactly hidden....

Thing is, if she'd asked me ahead of time, I might've posted the ad myself. It was for a good cause, after all. And if she hadn't included that line, I would merely have asked her to add a token line about wanting an icon, just to make it on-topic. Like I said, for a good cause.

But I really fucking hate that phrase. What, you're too good to read the rules now?

So now I just bitched at the whole community, most of whom have no idea what I'm talking about, and deleted the post. I really, really, really hate that line.

Wow, I think I've hit my anger quotient of the day, and it's not even dinnertime. Yay!

That line annoys me too, along with "let me know, and I'll delete it if asked." Why don't they just ask the moderators before posting? Is that so hard?

You know what's even better though? "Mods, you can delete this if you want."

GEE THANKS FOR YOUR PERMISSION, ASSHAT.

If it's your community, why not just add a bit to the userinfo "banned phrases" if your post contains any of the following phrases, it will be deleted on sight. Then a quick post to let current members know of the rule change and presto - no need to get mad, delete on sight and feel fully justified in doing so. If they ask why, point them to the userinfo.

But if you make it against the rules, then nobody can say it without also breaking the rules. Problem solved.

Ahem...call please? You were supposed to head back over for this stuff?

I have to admit, I've stopped telling people on [livejournal.com profile] interlingual to mind the rules. I just delete the posts. There is only one rule, and it's at the top of the community info in bold. There is no excuse in my mind.
