Hm.

Brillo pads aren't kosher.

Of course, as people pointed out to him, they're not kosher because your cookware also has to be kosher. However, this also makes them non-vegan, because somewhere beef tallow is involved in the process of making steel wool. I did not know this. It is possible that my vegan/vegetarian friends also did not know this. Now you do.

Fortunately, vegetarianism IS about diet.

I don't eat my shoes, my coat or my stockings*, anymore than I eat Brillo pads.

*other peoples stockings: now that's only by accident.

True for me. I'm wearing leather shoes because non leather shoes tend to be a) rubbish b) overpriced and c) bad for the feet. I also wear a leather jacket and silk stockings.

I don't, however, let meat proteins into my digestive system.

Wrong, Steel wool isn't vegan because it's steel WOOL.

Seriously though, the beef tallow is for the soap part of Brillo. There's nothing wrong with plain steel wool (non-soaped) that I know of. Most (OK, I don't really want to say most, because I don't know if it's actually more than half, but I will anyway) soap isn't vegetarian because it is made with animal fat. But there are plenty of soaps that are.
