So, I've been bored...

And I've been going through my list of running processes, looking them up on google, and turning off the nonessential ones. I like things neat, y'know? One of them was viewmgr.exe, you can all let out a heartfelt groan when I post the linkie: Clicky, clicky!

Yes, this is my fault. AOL sucks.

On the plus side, that's all I found that was really bad in any way.

I heartily recommend GAIM (http://gaim.sf.net). I've used it on Linux for a while now, and I've started using it on Windows as well. I connect to both AIM and MSN seamlessly through it... although file-sharing doesn't seem to want to work with more recent versions of AIM, due to unannounced changes in the protocol. Gah. AOL, could you at least try playing along with others for once?

I also hacked the AIM executable to get rid of the banner ad... after about three of those stupid audio ads started playing. Argh. Nothing like rudely interrupting the music I was playing through Winamp-- which, I should remind AOL, is another of the products they've bankrolled...

I like that, in a thread bitching about spyware, there's someone asking for a link to download Kazaa. Even the much vaunted "Kazaa Lite" stuck all kinds of shite in my system when I tried it out.

Kazaa Lite doesn't have much, actually...if you get the right one.
I totally cleaned off my computer, installed K-lite, and ran the spyware programs again.
All it found was "TopSearch.dll."
That's not bad, considering the original Kazaa installs too many to even mention, and won't run once it's removed.

May I say your icon is very cool (haven't seen that one before!) and is it 1984, or am I just making memory connections?

*pats Trillian*

Goood program, at least has worked great for me! I ditched the regular messengers long ago for various problems with each one. Trillian hasn't been PERFECT (mostly due to the core clients doing things that lock it out), but I bought the paid version because I liked their free one so much I wanted to support it (and hey get bonuses too, yay!). But it's not for everyone. Some people love it, and others hate it. "To each...," though for some reason Trillian doesn't work well with some systems, and it's not available for Mac users yet that I know of.
