Question!

Yeah, the monitor on my laptop is all icky and dirty. How does one clean a plasma monitor? Can I just windex it and hope for the best?

turn it off, get a paper towel, dampen it and use that.

I fear using anything like windex - I read that ammonia-based cleaners can melt the screen, so I just go with plain water.

Windex sounds like a bad idea. A damp cloth might be all right, though. (Personally, I just use a fluffy sock when my monitor gets dusty.)

stay away from windex; it's a bit harsh.

water will leave streaks. if you can't get everything out by wiping it with a dry (lint free) cloth try a mild solvent like Klear Screen® which will also leave streaks, which you will have to then buff out.
