This entry reminded me...

Funny story about my Bonpapa follows!

See, my Bonnemaman was a war bride. She was Belgian, he was American, they met, fell in love, got married, and did not have a baby until 1949. Costa's first language was English, Carmen's first language - I believe her only language at the time - was French. And maybe she knew a little Walloon. Whatever.

And my grandfather wanted to propose to her. But he didn't know how. So he carefully learned how to say, in French: "If I were to ask you to marry me, what would you say?", which is apparently quite a difficult conjugation. He never actually proposed to her.

Okay, it's not that interesting in the retelling. But I always like the story.

... That is a difficult conjugation. But very cool!
