E got into FIT for next year

In the Fashion Design program, which is supposed to be hard to get into though, to her annoyance, none of us expected her not to get in at all. It's a bit hard for us to get too excited.

Wow that's exciting! Congrats to E!

And I'm surprised NIF is finally making progress. I grew up in Rochester where our local laser lab told us on field trips that fusion energy was only 30 years away. It would be strange if they were actually approximately right...

Talking to older physicists, I think it's been "30 years away" for a long while but my field trip was probably around the year 2000.

Ah, I see, she's brilliant, but doesn't appear to know it. Reminds me of my niece.

Oh, plans are good! Not everyone has them, at that age.

(Hoping that they're good at adapting/adjusting plans too, if need be.)

Congrats on E for getting in!

(Better to have worried than be insufferably sure about it?)

That makes me curious as to what her long-term goals actually are?

I am admittedly skeptical of anyone in their teens or early twenties' career goals. Unless they have a patron, or someone who is going to help them realize those goals, and pave the way - it's bound to change. Or even it they do, it's still bound to change. Although there are people who planned to become an actress, fashion designer, novelist, singer, lawyer, doctor, etc - at the age of 10 and actually achieved that career and stayed in it all their lives.

Can't help but think that the decision to close Billingsgate and Smithfield, which localize a great deal of transportation and infrastructure to support their industries, is driven by someone wanting to get their hands on the real estate. Specialized industries need specialized services and create specialized problems---there are likely very few London places that will accept the truck traffic etc.
