If I were that mother in the Atlantic piece on helicopter parenting, I would have had WORDS for the officious old people in that opening anecdote. They interfered with someone else's child. They DETAINED someone else's child. They ARE "stranger danger."

My father has spoken several times about the year it snowed in July up here in Maine (where the month on the calendar doesn't matter when it comes to weather). He was growing tomatoes to sell to local stores when the snow came. He quickly covered his crop and saved it from the heavy, wet snow that fell briefly that July day. However, he wound-up getting grounded for it. Why? In his rush he grabbed the first thing he saw to save the tomatoes, the bed sheets his mom had just hung-out to dry.
