Taken from [community profile] metaquotes

Stupid, and wasteful. There's people starving in this country, and they throw away thousands of dollars worth of perfectly good, un-pooped on food.

That's what's really disgusting.

They might have had no choice in the matter, though. Having worked with food for 15 years, I know the Health Department has certain requirements for situations like that, and I'm almost positive that legally, in order not to be shut down, they may have been required to throw all of that away.

Maybe not the most logical thing to do, but then not all laws are. :/

For precautionary measures they might, but I don't know for sure.
I know it doesn't make sense, since half that produce grows in the ground in soil fertilized by what?...COW MANURE...but *shrugs* you know...

I'm reading The Grapes of Wrath right now... similar stuff, with all the fruit being destroyed because the farmers can't make a profit on it, and the migrants starving. Only the situation in the book is even more disgustingly wasteful.
