New York City’s air pollution among the world’s worst as Canada wildfire smoke shrouds Northeast

Yeah, I glanced out the window last night at the moon, and said "Wow, that's really red for being so high in the sky already".

Stay safe, everyone.

I had to mask outside for the first time in ages (other than for crowd reasons).

Weather Underground has a map of the readings from various places in the US--it's headed "US counties health map and air pollution monitors," but there are a number of counties with more than one monitoring station, and probably some with none at all. This URL is for the map centered on my location, but it was easy to zoom out and then scroll southwest to New York City: https://www.wunderground.com/health/us/ma/brighton/42.35,-71.16?cm_ven=localwx_modaq

They have a lot of New York area stations still reporting numbers over 200, and also the map is oddly spotty, with (for example) a 65 reading and a 151 near each other in Bed-Stuy.

Yeah, I'm all the way down in the DC Metro region, and we're having some concerns. I've been on at least one bus that wasn't charging fares (something the bus systems do on bad ozone days, to encourage people to drive less).

It's hazy and the Moon is red here in Chicago, too.

When I woke up, I wondered why I was tasting smoke in the back of my throat. Then the weather report said "smoke from forest fires in Canada". Yuk

We're getting some of that haze here in Ontario too; I couldn't figure out what it was at first when I went outside.

One of the few advantages of this mid-level storm system parked over Maine and the Maritime provinces since last Saturday and been raining on us since then and will probably continue through at least this Saturday: It's kept us out of the smoke plume as Quebec burns to the ground.

I've had a scratchy throat for a couple of days now. I assumed it was seasonal allergies, but I think the wildfire smoke probably plays a big part too. We didn't leave the house yesterday except to walk the dogs.

And people have been setting off fireworks (what holiday is it, anyway?), so things smell a bit sulfurous -- not what we need when the air is already smoky.

I was scheduled to go into the office in Manhattan today, because there's an in-person social thing after work, but maybe not, with the air the way it is.

Ugh, uncontrolled burn season is always near the top of The Worst.
