Not relevant to your current situation, but when I was six (ish) and lost my first baby tooth, my paternal grandmother told me that if I could refrain from sticking my tongue into the empty space, the new tooth would grow in gold. Would that even be a good thing? At any rate, I couldn't prove that she was lying because of course I couldn't keep my tongue from probing. Also trying to imagine her being told the same thing in the 1890s, and passing it along.
