Soooooooo random question

Is it possible to have a hiccup without having the hiccups? And, follow-up, is it a hiccup if you just have the quick involuntary intake of air without the "hic" part?

I've done it, though not as often as simply getting the hiccups

Well, hiccups are defined as involuntary spasms of the diaphragm... so I guess if it just twitches, maybe?

hmm, like an esophageal spasm? I have those, had them more when my acid reflux was up.

I had the first happen recently. Thought it was odd. I had the second, too, at some point in the past, in the middle of a shiver if I remember correctly. But I'd call it more of an involuntary gasp than a hiccup.

Yes. I can halt hiccups after the first one if I do it quickly and carefully enough. Once I’ve had three or four “hic”s, they’re established and very hard to stop.

I frequently have a hiccup after a mouthful of hot tea. Oddly, coffee does not have the same effect at all.

I do that all the time. It's like I've forgotten to breathe and then suddenly remembered.
