Got to tell off some jerk who was bitching and moaning about it, like she doesn't know the answers. "Oh, well, that's just my opinion!"

Yes, well, your opinion is garbage, so keep it to yourself! Like, didn't we all learn in kindy that some opinions don't need to be shared? Every single day I run into people who, in my opinion, are not very bright, but I don't say it aloud!

I didn't say that, but I should have, and then when she asked if I was calling her stupid I could've said "No, I'm calling you rude."

But I didn't say that, so I didn't.

I did, and after "It's my opinion!" she shut up, so there is that. I'm content with changing behavior. It doesn't have to be hearts and minds.

I still can't figure out what leads some to believe labeling some speech act as an opinion (or as a joke) automatically and retroactively bars any opposing or criticizing speech act in reply. Is it something in the air?

I suspect that it's the fact that they know their position is inherently indefensible, but they hope nobody will continue to argue with them. They don't really believe in it, btw - if it's YOUR opinion or joke they don't like, they'll definitely say something.
