Let's imagine, hypothetically, that somebody with grand plans didn't do anything in her garden/yard all summer. Hypothetically, if that somebody were to haul up all the weeds in this lovely weather, what could she cram down at this late point that'd make it look reasonably nice? Or at least sort of okay? Not grass, I hate the stuff. I mean, this hypothetical person hates the stuff. Hypothetically.

The first question is of course, what's the location like where you'd hypothetically be putting these plants? Bright sun vs shade, damp vs dry, etc. My mind is going toward bright-sun plants, since we've got plenty of hot summer still ahead of us, but that's not helpful if your hypothetical garden bed is actually in the shade.

My other thought is that instead of being late for summer, you could sort of get a head start on autumn by planting things that will continue to look nice when it gets colder, so like... chrysanthemums? Or ornamental cabbages, I think those are really cool, but maybe that's just me.

That’s my record, too. My sister’s yard is VERY mutated, possibly a side effect of living by the power line corridor.

Hosta. They die back in winter and reemerge in spring and one can buy grown plants at this time of year. If one can find bulbs or rhizomes (daylilies, iris, tulips, daffodils) in pots, though they are usually sold as bulbs / rhizomes later in the year for fall planting.

Pots of annuals would also be a way to brighten up newly weeded bare spots.

We don't have enough shade for hostas to be happy.

Marigolds, which have the advantage that they're likely to be on sale right now.

It's too soon to put out lettuce for fall, summer heat would probably kill it.

Hmm, probably too late to grow things from seed, and summer poinsettia reseeds for a few years anyway.

Probably check on what's within budget and looks like some regular water will salvage it from the sale shelves. (I'm good at the root tease but not everyone is.)
