My guess would be you left a comment on someone's entry somewhere and now someone has replied to it but in the meantime whoever's journal that is locked the entry such that you can't see it anymore.
Yeah, it appears to be some quirk of how the inbox messaging handles entries that have their access level changed after you get a reply - presumably I'd've been able to see the comment if it had gone to my email.
I always assumed that was not exactly a quirk but more a feature (as you're not just removing access for that person but at the same time removing that person from not just that but perhaps any locked discussion going on on your DW, so maybe you want that because they're trolling or otherwise upsetting you and/or others so yeah, it's time to lock them out. Though I suppose a ban would accomplish the same thing).
I don't know why I always thought this made sense, on further thought maybe it doesn't (oh, but (edit) thinking on it more, maybe you're right about how it'd go to email anyway, so more quirk than feature, entirely).
I don't have emailed comments set up (it was too much upkeep so I got rid of that years ago) but now I feel like enabling it again just to test this whole thing out (I have more than one DW, so it'd be easy enough to just pull this series of steps on myself to see what happens).
Edited (forgot the word 'locked', amazing what getting up for a bit to walk around can do for my thinking) 2019-03-29 08:42 (UTC)
Yes, I've had the same experience...usually it's in regards to a post that someone decided to lock or make private or delete after I posted to it and the comment was made in response to mine.
I had that happen once and DW thought the whole journal had been deleted! Except it came back after a couple days, with no public explanations, so maybe it was just a bad server hiccup?

(And don't worry about it! I'd expect to be able to see a reply to my comment in my inbox even if the entry itself had been locked too.)
