Having recently HAD a hysterectomy, the herbal tea thing sounds like a dreadful mandate.

I look at it like childbirth. Some women claimed it wasn't painful-- it was like bad indigestion. Others were in tears during pre-labor. obviously, they were not feeling the same thing! Pain can be very personal. I like to wait and see how bad it is, but not assume the worst.

For the hysterectomy, Ibuprofen would not have been enough for the first couple of days. After that, it was fine. For childbirth, I had one with epidural and one without, and I would have liked the epidural for the second but didn't get to the hospital in time.

To mandate that you won't be in enough pain to need serious painkillers is short-sighted and patronizing. You might not! But there's no guarantee, and you're not a failure if they pain is too much to bear. :(
