I want to issue a blanket apology

This is not my fault, but I still feel bad: if all the links lately are depressing, that's because everything sucks. There's, like, no good news to be had anywhere. I'm gonna issue a formal complaint to the management as soon as I find their mailing address.

I go through phases of having to seek out cute pictures of baby animals to help me cope, but those aren't exactly thought-provoking shareworthy pieces.

Not good news, but not things-are-awful links; apologies if you've already seen (or linked) them:
Southwestern Gothic, discussing the "regional gothic" tumblr meme. (If this exists on tumblr, I couldn't find it.)

Congress is looking to extend it again for recordings; I keep thinking I need to make noise at my congressfolks and bring it up to other people.

But I don't think we'll get blanket extensions again.

My cousin who lives in a different country surprised me by calling me at lunchtime to let me know he was in town, and we had a nice lunch. I needed to share some good news.

It is truly shit.

But here you go: A woman saved a Greyhound bus full of immigrants from border patrol agents by being super loud and acting, in her own spectacular words, like "A WHOLE DONKEY." As long as I remember that there are people like Tiana Smalls in the world, it can't be all bad.

It may not be - but eligibility for "Miss America" is still drawn from the "Miss [State]" winners, which still have evening gown and swimsuit contests. It's likely those will change to better match the Miss America rules, but not until they're more stable. And the rules for next year aren't adjustable at this point.

Rob Brezny, practitioner of "Free Will Astrology", teaches the concept of pronoia. It's the opposite of paranoia - it's the belief that the entire Universe is a vast conspiracy to bless you in particular, and every living being in general. Here's a website of pronoiac good news.

isn't "free will astrology" a contradiction in terms?
acelightning: purple starry sky (space)

[personal profile] acelightning 2018-06-10 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
Not really. Brezny often uses the old astrologers' slogan, "The stars IMpel, they do not COMpel." The information astrology (or any other form of divination, really) can provide is meant as advice, more than anything else. (On top of this, Rob Brezny himself is a smart, funny old hippie, and I'm an old hippie myself, so I like the way he presents things.)

never heard of malpractice suits? Hospitals get sued for their mistakes all the time.

Hospitals, and individual doctors, have to have "malpractice insurance" - like car insurance, if someone files a claim against your for damages, the insurance pays all or most of it. The cost of the insurance is very high, but the cost of even one malpractice payout is a lot higher.

Good News

[personal profile] marahmarie 2018-06-09 08:06 am (UTC)(link)
If you read MSN News, there's a section (at least on the phone app; not sure about desktop version) called Good News, which is all heartwarming/inspiring/do-gooding/inspirational stuff. The truckers saving the guy from jumping off the bridge link I shared a while back, I found it in that. There are a lot of good stories, but I actually feel compelled to highlight more depressing over more uplifting stories only because there are Serious Issues that need addressing and resolving and I only have so much time, energy and patience for gathering links/making posts so I'll usually point out the more sobering stuff. :/

ETA: Here you go - desktop version: https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/good-news

Well ...

[personal profile] ysabetwordsmith 2018-06-09 09:04 am (UTC)(link)
I run into that problem sometimes.

One solution is good news networks:
https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/need-some-good-news-for-a-change-top-5-good-news-web-sites/

Another is topical sites:
https://www.sciencedaily.com/news/top/science/

I subscribe to people who post art or photographs because it gives me something nice to link. Recipes work too.

I don't want to post only depressing stuff. That's not good for me or anyone else.

AH, they always make you fill out the form in quaduplicate (but they only have the triplicate form on hand). And the online version is never available.
