Getting sick of my antivirus program.

I realize that occasional exhortations to upgrade are the price of using a free program, but it's getting out of hand. What do you guys use?

Even if lip service, having a private client offer something coal miners have needed for a long time feels insulting.

With regards to bamboo, Ive been finding this push for these "carbon neutral" building materials has been interesting (although I am aware that cement is not 100 percent as dirty as suggested either).

At [personal profile] cattitude's advice, I am mostly relying on the Windows Defender program that's built in to Windows 10, though I also put F-Secure on here because the year's subscription I bought for my previous machine is good through sometime in July.

Haven't used anything except the built-in Windows anti-virus since Windows 8 and now Windows 10. Never have any issues re: viruses and such.

That bread clips article reminded me of this: http://www.horg.com/horg/?page_id=2

I feel like I remember reading somewhere - either on the HORG site or elsewhere - about different varieties common in different regions - but I'm not finding it at the moment.

It seems a bit strange that there are so many varieties if there are just two companies making them.

If you find anything more, let me know. (I'm curious but not enough to research it myself.)

We can't get people to accept golden rice, which is packed with beta carotene, because it's a GMO... but they think pink pineapples are gonna sell?

It will sell like hotcakes, becuase that's EXACTLY the sort of stupid people are.

People won't accept golden rice because it's advertised as healthy, and people want to know that healthy things won't kill them. But as evidenced by anyone who popped an anonymous pill at a rave or stuck a needle in their arm to get high, humans are totes willing to risk death for recreational purposes. Golden rice is GMO? Might cause cancer, and must be stopped. Pink pinapples are GMO? Might cause cancer, but, what the hell, so does booze.

OMG! The keyboard article. On one hand it is reassuring to know I'm not as bad as some. On the other my poor credit card is prepared to sulk at you.

Haven't spent a dollar yet. I'm fortunate the Keboardio is still in pre-order mode and they are struggling with manufacturing woes (their blog on this subject is absolutely fascinating).

I love the look of the keyboard layout and would like to try it. Not so enamoured of the lumps of wood look.

I use Avast. It's pretty great with regards to not constantly bugging me with anything, let alone "omg upgrade!!1$" messages.

I only used free AV programs when I couldn't afford to renew my F-Prot subscription. I started way back when they were the only one offering a site license at much the same price everyone else wanted for a single copy.

http://www.cyren.com/f-prot-product-overview.html

It's $29/yr and is good for up to 5 "home use" computers.

One of the things I like about it is that I can set it to just *warn* me about files and not automatically quarantine them. since I have some old programs that sometimes get mis-identified, this is useful.

Also, sometimes I want the opportunity to make a copy of viruses. :-)

the nytimes has run a few stories about child marriage in the u.s. over the last few years but i feel like, in general, no one cares :( it doesn't inspire mainstream/widespread outrage if it's here instead of some "backwards" culture we can condemn to feel superior.
