I'm not the best person to advise on British childrearing, since my mum is German and my British dad worked nights while I was growing up, but the first I'd heard of ants on a log was through the Babysitter's Club. I don't think we have an equivalent with a different name, either.

(I'm not certain whether it's ubiquitous even in America, because I have American BSC ebooks and they explain what it is.)

First I heard of them was from Americans online. When I was growing up you only did two things with peanut butter - stuck it on toast or in a sandwich. The idea of combining it with sweet things is a pretty recent import from the US. (It was known about before but I think viewed with extreme suspicion. Only more recently did people dare to try it and it started to spread. I still think it's vile though.)

Oh, sweet and savoury's common enough, especially fruit with meat or cheese. In Yorkshire it's the done thing to eat your Christmas cake with cheese.

It's specifically peanut butter that we wouldn't previously have mixed with sweet.
