There is something SERIOUSLY fucked up in this country

Last night, I was watching Futurama. Good show, love it. A commercial came on...

There was some sort of sweepstakes, with balloons and cheering and a guy at the door, and confetti falling from nowhere, and we find out that he's won "college benefits, government jobs, something else (forget what)" but then he says he didn't fill out a card, he applied online. This ends with the semi-dressed woman saying "All males must apply with the selectice service when they turn 18!!!"

*jawdrop*

What.
The.
Fuck????

I'm not even sure where to start. This is just so wrong, it's not even funny. I sat there about a minute after this commercial ended before I could even yell in agony and terror.

Let's start with the beginning. I suspect that what this kid had "won" was a stint in the army. Unless I'm mistaken. So, he won a chance to get himself killed, and is this some sort of sideways way of saying they wanna start the draft again?

And then... making this into a cheesy commercial with balloons, to hide what's really going on... that's just wrong. I prefered seeing the "army of one" commercials in the movie theaters EVERY FRIGGIN' FILM I SAW, frankly. At least those aren't blatently stupid.

I have to gouge out my eyes now.

Yeah - this would be Meghan, not sure if you'd remember me or not..but yeah. Stupid commercials.

I prefered seeing the "army of one" commercials ..those commercials always use to bug me, but that don't in the least anymore. My brothers best friend's in the Army and he's in Iraq, so now I don't mind them. But that balloon crap, eh, stupid.

Was it Futurama on Adult Swim? Because I was half watching it last night, and don't remember seeing any commercials like that. Though we did get an army of one commercial a few times. I'm used to it though. Trying to brainwash children and whatnot.

Hmmmm... I was watching the 11:30 version. That might be why. Or they might be showing it only on your coast. *shrug* Evil government.

Actually, I don't think it's as bad as it seems, though I do agree it's a very stupid and tacky and tasteless commercial. IIRC, any male who isn't registered can't qualify for college benefits, etc. This has been around for years, it's nothing new. Yes, it is a way to do the draft, but at the moment it's just registration.

I think there would be humongous outrage if the draft was re-instituted, so I really doubt anyone's going to try it unless there's a real crisis.

Must have missed that... That's what I get for not paying attention to what I'm saying, I guess :) I think my main point still holds though.

Erk! Way to glamourise death and desctruction! At least our Army/Navy/RAF/TA adverts take it seriously and although the *thinks* Army? ones do mention the benefits, it's things like "I'm able to do this thing, I can repair so and so" not "ooh look I can get through university for less" or whatever.

Grr. If you're gonna send the young men of your country to die, don't pretend it's going to be a party. We did that in WWI and we lost a generation.
