There is something SERIOUSLY fucked up in this country
Last night, I was watching Futurama. Good show, love it. A commercial came on...
There was some sort of sweepstakes, with balloons and cheering and a guy at the door, and confetti falling from nowhere, and we find out that he's won "college benefits, government jobs, something else (forget what)" but then he says he didn't fill out a card, he applied online. This ends with the semi-dressed woman saying "All males must apply with the selectice service when they turn 18!!!"
*jawdrop*
What.
The.
Fuck????
I'm not even sure where to start. This is just so wrong, it's not even funny. I sat there about a minute after this commercial ended before I could even yell in agony and terror.
Let's start with the beginning. I suspect that what this kid had "won" was a stint in the army. Unless I'm mistaken. So, he won a chance to get himself killed, and is this some sort of sideways way of saying they wanna start the draft again?
And then... making this into a cheesy commercial with balloons, to hide what's really going on... that's just wrong. I prefered seeing the "army of one" commercials in the movie theaters EVERY FRIGGIN' FILM I SAW, frankly. At least those aren't blatently stupid.
I have to gouge out my eyes now.

Hey there
I prefered seeing the "army of one" commercials ..those commercials always use to bug me, but that don't in the least anymore. My brothers best friend's in the Army and he's in Iraq, so now I don't mind them. But that balloon crap, eh, stupid.

I think there would be humongous outrage if the draft was re-instituted, so I really doubt anyone's going to try it unless there's a real crisis.

That's why there's a bill in congress just now talking about the draft, right? And extending it to females, which is... well, fair. And why they've been talking for a year now that "we need to increase the size of our armed forces....".

Grr. If you're gonna send the young men of your country to die, don't pretend it's going to be a party. We did that in WWI and we lost a generation.

The thing is, our army is made up heavily of poor people who see it as the easy (or only) way to get through college or get a job. Pisses me off that they're advertising like that to kids barely old enough to know what they're doing.
