Y'know, it's not the news that upsets me...

It's the out-of-proportion reaction to it. Movies? Visits from quite famous people? WHY?

I just... I just don't understand why people are still chattering on and on about this. Isn't there something more interesting going on, somewhere? A genocide, perhaps? Maybe somebody being shot who shouldn't've been? Perhaps a scary new disease spreading all across hell and half of Europe?

I don't know. Maybe the news is slower than I realized.

Of course, maybe I'm just pissed that this kid met the alleged President and didn't, as near as I can tell, take the time to chew him out for being, well, evil.

I might just be in a bad mood, of course. That's always an option as well.

not to make you in a worse mood, but here's another article about it: http://syndicated.livejournal.com/thinkprogress/762494.html

I seem to recall that everyone who meets with Hizzonor B. is aggressively "coached" in advance - as in, instructed very sternly on just exactly what one does and does not say to "The President" (pronounced with audibly florid reverence).

Um ... when we're surrounded by heavily armed Secret Service agents?

Not that that would be enough to stifle my natural impulse to rant and snarl...

Not me. But then, of course, I'm defective - I was born without a self-delusion gland. Tragic, huh?

Yeah, I had a similiar reaction when her pending retirement was announced. "Whythe#uck NOW? I mean, my GOD, why?" Yeah, yeah, family matters, twilight of life, yeah, my deepest sympathies and all ... but it seemed like she waited until the worst possible moment. And yet, looking back, what moment would have been less inopportune? Would it be reasonable of us to expect her to hang around forever being our last-hope bulwark against all-out fascism until she crumbles to dust? Would that have made the difference?

And another thought often occurs. I'm inclined to envision the kid with his finger in the dike. The vapid and bilious townspeople pass by, jeer, throw rotten fruit, and delight endlessly in giving him wedgies, day after day - until he finally collects his dignity, withdraws his finger, and strolls to the nearest high ground from which to watch the whole place drown slowly in its own fecklessness...

*sigh*

Still, now, of all times...

<bitter sarcasm>I think that people like to hear about horrible terrible things happening, but after a while, they really don't. It wears on them and makes them depressed, and so, because the news agencies understand this, they give us americans bouts of freedom where we don't have to think about people being slaughtered in thre thousands, because really, it's not like it affects us anyway.</bitter sarcasm>
