Anthology shows have been considered risky bets if one wants a long running series. Do you enjoy them? And are there shows which might be considered “stealth” anthology shows, where a lot, if not the main focus of the show, is on non-recurring characters?

Just one thing: 02 September 2025

It's challenge time!

Comment with Just One Thing you've accomplished in the last 24 hours or so. It doesn't have to be a hard thing, or even a thing that you think is particularly awesome. Just a thing that you did.

Feel free to share more than one thing if you're feeling particularly accomplished!

Extra credit: find someone in the comments and give them props for what they achieved!

Nothing is too big, too small, too strange or too cryptic. And in case you'd rather do this in private, anonymous comments are screened. I will only unscreen if you ask me to.

Go!

Batman: Say Uncle by Megaerakles

Fandom: Batman
Pairings/Characters: Jason Todd, Tim Drake
Rating: teen
Length: 46k
Creator Links: [archiveofourown.org profile] Megaerakles
Theme: food, fork in the road AU, domestic, family, fixit, gen, happy endings, secret identity reveal,

Summary: Tim is prepared to take the steps necessary to ensure that Bruce will not feel obligated to adopt Tim when a comatose Jack Drake inevitably dies. But what could be better than preventing Bruce from ending up with a son he doesn't want? Bringing back the one he does.

Jason agrees to the Replacement's stupid, stupid plan to invite some strange adult man he's never met to come live with him, if only to keep the idiot alive long enough for him to serve his purpose in the Great Red Hood Revenge Scheme.

Might this new roommate situation have an impact on either of their worldviews? Surely not...

Reccer's Notes: Both Tim and Jason are oblivious idiots in the best way in this. And Jason shows love through cooking (and teaching how to cook).

MCU: Dinner In Other Languages by tielan

Fandom: MCU
Pairings/Characters: Steve Rogers/Maria Hill
Rating: Gen
Length: 3107 words
Creator Links: [personal profile] tielan
Theme: food, working together, friends with benefits, female characters,

Summary: Maria can manage professional colleagues with Rogers, but she values her place in S.H.I.E.L.D more.

Reccer's Notes: Tielan's specialty is female characters who get overlooked by the rest of fandom, and I love the way she writes Maria Hill: a complex woman doing a difficult job in a world that doesn't respect her. And I love the way she writes Steve: a man who deeply and sincerely respects (and falls for) competent women.

cranes

I saw some sandhill cranes in the yard not long ago. There was a juvenile and two adults. They are common in the area, but I've only seen them in the yard once or twice. Photo taken with my phone, through the blinds.

September Stampede - Day One - Flat Surface (and Master List for the month)

Welcome to the September Stampede - the 10 minutes a day bite-size cleaning challenge that lasts from 1st to 30th September.

This is supposed to be a low-stress challenge - if you miss a day, it doesn't matter, if the day's challenge doesn't suit, repeat the day before or start on the next day's. With the exception of two days, the challenges should take about 10 minutes, if you want to spend longer that's great, judge by your personal available time and energy.

To make it easier to take part and not be held up by time differences and days when I'm not able to post, all challenges will be posted in the table below the cut to aid both those taking part and the daily poster.

The majority of the challenges should be adaptable e.g. clean a flat surface - desks, kitchen worktops, bathroom cabinets, floors, tables would all work. Similarly for clean a vertical surface, any of the following (and no doubt others) would count - windows, wall tiles, mirrors, doors. Cleaning a drawer can just as easily be a box of things or any other kind of container or a cupboard. You pick whether you work in one area of your home for the month/until it's finished or work in a different area each day. If you want to repeat a task e.g. cleaning a drawer until the full set of drawers is sorted and cleaned, go for it.

My biggest request for the month is that, whenever you can, you join in the chat - even if you haven't done the day's challenge come and cheer for others. We're here for the ups and downs this month so you can tell us when you're struggling as well as celebrate your successes. (If anyone thinks all this looks familiar, may I commend you on your memory and confess that yes, it is cribbed from last year's post :) )

Daily Challenge Table shown below the cut )

And so today's challenge is to spend 10 minutes cleaning a flat surface.

Just to give you all the heads up - I'm not sure how often I'm going to be able to make a post so each time I will post the whole chart so that you can keep track of the challenges - feel free to comment on the most recent post at any stage with as many days progress as you can.

Good luck and have a great September.

Word : Velleity

velleity [vəˈlēədē, veˈlēədē]

noun

1. a wish or inclination not strong enough to lead to action

examples

1. We may well say: I would desire to be young; but we do not say: I desire to be young; seeing that this is not possible; and this motion is called a wishing, or as the Scholastics term it a velleity, which is nothing else but a commencement of willing, not followed out, because the will, by reason of impossibility or extreme difficulty, stops her motion, and ends it in this simple affection of a wish. Treatise on the Love of God, Saint Francis de Sales, 1567-1622
2. Ms. Marcus also errantly dismissed the Constitution’s separation of powers, which entrusts “all legislative powers” to Congress, as a mere velleity that should yield to executive legislation when Congress is divided. "The Separations of Powers is not a Suggestion." The Washington Post, Letters to the Editor, 14 Jan 2022.

origins

early 17th century: from medieval Latin velleitas, from Latin velle ‘to wish’.

Birdfeeding

Today is mostly sunny and warm.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches, plus a squirrel up a tree with a walnut in its mouth.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 9/1/25 -- I watered the telephone pole garden and some of the savanna seedlings.

A few sunchokes are blooming.

EDIT 9/1/25 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 9/1/25 -- I did a bit of work on the old picnic table.

EDIT 9/1/25 -- I did more work around the patio.

EDIT 9/1/25 -- I did a bit of work around the yard.

Are you also wondering how it's September 1st?

Name: Lins

Age: The answer to life, the universe and everything (42)

I post: Snippets of writing, fanfics, ruminations, random thoughts, journal entries, notes about what I'm reading, watching or playing.

Hobbies: Writing, reading, artsy things (sketching, gelli prints, collage, etc.), video games (Minecraft, Fallout, TES, Stardew, Dishonored, and more), hiking, swimming, wandering... I could go on.

Fandoms: Currently: Star Wars (I live in the Clone Wars era for the most part); Skyrim; Fallout; Cyberpunk 2077.

Looking to meet people who: Have similar interests, share their thoughts, ruminations, talk about their passions, can commiserate on how we could do better as a species because *gestures broadly*

My posting schedule is: Sporadic. I've had this journal for years (it's an import of my old LiveJournal which I started in 2001) but I've long been on other social media, much of which I've deleted over the last year. I'm working on getting back into blogging and reducing the time I spend on places like Reddit.

Before adding me, you should know: I'm a lefty. I don't plan to post about politics here (I tend to do that elsewhere) but I reserve the right to vent on occasion.

I'm an atheist. (I don't go out of my way to harsh anyone's personal spirituality but I am critical of religious institutions and this does affect how I navigate the world.)

Reading and posting may be sporadic as I work on parting from other social media and reviving my blogging and creative writing.

Dealbreakers are: The usual -isms and phobias. Trump voters. Nazis. AI devotees. General assholes. (Wheaton's Law, eh?) Tl;dr: We can debate pineapple on pizza (I'm pro), we will not debate human rights and wellbeing.

Sherlock Holmes: Tea, Coffee, and a Bite of Beef by MadamzelleG

Fandom: Sherlock Holmes (Books/Granada)
Pairings/Characters: Holmes/Watson
Rating: G
Length: 1114 words
Creator Links: MadamzelleG
Theme: food & cooking

Summary: Holmes never orders dinner for himself, but Watson has long since stopped asking why. Instead, he allows the quiet ritual to unfold—Holmes sipping his coffee, stealing a bite here and there from Watson’s plate with effortless precision. In the warm glow of the Café Royal, amidst the murmur of conversation and the clink of silverware, an unspoken understanding lingers between them: Holmes takes, and Watson never minds.

Reccer's Notes: An intimate little scene of Watson and Holmes dining out together. With some exploration of Holmes' canon issues around food, but not in clinical way, more like Watson observing Holmes.

Round 178: Food & Cooking

Photograph of steel spoons and spices in a dramatic setting with added text that gives it the look of a gourmet magazine cover: September 2025. Food & Cooking, at Fancake. Steel teaspoons are arranged in an elogated oval to suggest a fish, with the bowls acting as scales and some of the handles left visible to create the fins and tail, giving the creature a spiky appearance. The concave bowls are dusted with a powdery orange spice for color and one spoon at the front of the fish is filled with a coarse black spice to create an eye. The fish is on a black surface with a rough texture and around it are three skinny green peppers, a mound of salt, a mound of orange spice, and a dipping bowl filled with a clear amber liquid.

Content notes aren't required, but they're nice to include in your recs, especially if a fanwork has untagged content that readers may wish to know about in advance. strangers only

Name:keplers_angels

Age:40s

Location: US

About Me: I was born at livejournal where I went to escape loneliness and to worship loneliness and to tell my darkest secrets to intimate strangers. I am here for interactive relationships. It makes me sad when I read people's posts and become invested in their lives and they don't reciprocate. That's not why I'm here. I don't want to follow people-- I want to feel less alone. If you're not going to read or comment, I don't want you in my feed - I can just watch tv.

About My Journal: Sometimes it gets explicit without warning. Or dark. Or beautiful. Or even optimistic. (lately it's gotten pretty sexy) Not every post is warn-worthy but some things I talk about that might trigger: sex, infidelity, menopause, child sexual abuse, suicidation/depression, mathematics, feminism, breasts/mastectomy... In general, I am an adult (with all sorts of glorious and effedup flaws) and I will not avoid talking about adult, glorious, or effedup things.

What I Write: posts are frequently poetry or poet-y. Often on themes above. Catharsis is important to me. I write to process. I use language as a weapon, as a seduction... I'm drawn to the surreal. The poems of my own that I like the most are love poems, sex poems, or poems that feel like psychadelic sci-fi vignettes. I also have a recurring alter-ego character who lives on the tundra and flies an airship. She pops in from time to time (but never on invitation.)

What I Don't Write
: I like to believe that even when I'm posting to vent about whatever nonsense I've gotten myself into that it's interesting or well-articulated. I try to not write boring things or boring-ly. I do however repeat myself (we'll call it recapping) or conversely, refer to things that I never explained. Also I sometimes forget to close parentheses, and always use too many ellipses. I don't write fanfiction here. (though I may mention it once in a blue moon.)

What I Read:
IRL? sci-fi, dystopia, science, math, education, poems, mostly female writers on principle. On DW? I read my friends page maybe weekly? I always catch up. I read it all. Unless someone isn't interacting with my posts -- then I will be sad and not read them either and eventually unfriend.

What I Don't Read: Fanfiction outside of MfU, other journalled works of fiction (usually) as I'm really here for more personal and autobiographical confessions, poems, and exchanges
