alchemia has pointed out that "Don't simply tell your women friends how to be safe and avoid rape" is dangerous, and I agree with her - much as I understand the writer's intention (do not imply that women need to act a certain way to avoid rape, and if they deviate from it then they "deserve" it) the fact remains that knowledge of how to avoid dangerous situations is always helpful (like "always carry your drink and never accept a new one from a stranger" - in a perfect world we wouldn't need to, but it's not and we do). She also points out how karate lessons are a good idea for everyone ;)
