Grades and my sociolinguistics class

1. Got an A on the sociolinguistics midterm, and an A on the first project.
2. Only got a 75 on the Latin midterm. That's it, next week is devoted to Latin! For one thing, I'll give myself more time for the homework....
3. *giggles* My sociolinguistics class, we're discussing gender-marked words in English, and reading from the books how various words are currently or were historically marked. One pair of words is male and female. Now, really I think the important topic would be that they now appear to be a matched pair, with the feminine form marked as feminine, but we went etymologically and the professor mentioned (reading from the book) that feminine comes from a diminuative. Up goes the hand and open the mouth.

"But that doesn't matter! We were just talking about this in my medieval Latin! It was a big trend after the fall of the Roman empire, all the words were taking the diminuative because those forms were longer, and the same thing was happening with the verbs, they used the frequentative so that a word that had mean "kept throwing" now would mean just "throwing" because those words were longer and More Impressive!"

"But does that apply to male as well? That's from mas, masculis..."

"Probably. The -ul infix is a diminuitive, like Caligula, which means little boot."

"0.0"

"Why don't I just ask Professor Dunkle next time I see him?"

Which I did, and I was right. Yay! I love being right!

Things to do by tomorrow:

1. Study for, pass psych midterm
2. Type up that essay (two pages, double spaced, easy-peasy)
3. Type up that reading journal (gah, boring!)
4. Study for, prepare to pass the Core 9 midterm (more boring)
5. Sleep
