That design happens to BE easy to operate with a foot, which comes in handy if you're juggling 3 or 4 bags, a coat, and who knows what else in a shopping mall or one of those food-and-convenience-shops highway rest/truck stops.

(That said, I don't stomp on them when I have my arms full...)
