Breadfish!

*gets dizzy*

Okay, I've been trying to figure out the lyrics.

We've got: Tell me, have you seen the marvelous breadfish? Swimming in the ocean waters? Have you seen the ???? brrrrrreadfish? He's like an ???? sandwich, for fishermen and sharks.

I'm told that the second unknown word is inverse, which makes little sense. The first ??? *must* be eponymous, but pronounced weirdly.

Of course, I'd have to trek out to Minnesota. I'm sure I can find immersion programs right here in New York. I go to Minnesota, I'm visiting friends, not learning languages. With the exception of Walloon. I'd go anywhere to get a chance to learn Walloon. And if anybody on my friends list can help me with my goal, without having me learn French, I'd be happy.

Oh, and this icon reminds me, I finally am starting to catch up on my Stargate watching. Yesterday, saw the one with Teal'c in the Chair (dum dum dah). That was a *really* depressing episode. But it was worth it to see Evil Daniel. Why is it that characters always look better/are cooler when they're evil? Evil Daniel was even hotter than regular Daniel, even before we saw him being evil (okay, that was all of a second, but that's not the point). And both evil and vampire Willows were much cooler than normal Willow. This is a trend, and I don't know why.

A lot of people confuse the noun "effect" with the related verb "affect". To counteract this, quite a few other people remind them that "the noun is effect and the verb is affect". Well, that's true... but only for that one case. Affect and effect also have different meanings as a noun and verb, respectively!

Affect, the verb: to create an effect (among other things, but this is the only meaning you're likely to use)
Affect, the noun: "the conscious subjective aspect of an emotion considered apart from bodily changes". Um, yeah. Gotta love Merriam Webster. That's what people mean when they talk about a "flat affect".

Effect, the noun: something that follows an antecedent (and a host of other meanings)
Effect, the verb: to cause to come into being.

Yes, I know you knew that. It's just been bugging me.

Dear Miss Manners:

On only a few days' notice, I was married in February to a wonderful woman. Having not had time to properly invite friends and family to our nuptials, and since we already had been living together for 14 years, we didn't expect to receive gifts.

Nevertheless, we did receive many wonderful cards and calls of congratulations, and a few relatives did send us thoughtful gifts. Of course we promptly wrote them thank-you notes and telephoned them to show our sincere appreciation. Unfortunately, a decision by the California Supreme Court voided our marriage, along with the marriages of approximately 4,000 other same-gender couples.

What is the proper etiquette with respect to keeping or returning these special gifts now that the court has forced us to untie the knot?

Wedding presents may be properly accepted during the couple's engagement, and need only be returned if they no longer wish to be married. You have, after all, met Miss Manners's basic and non-negotiable requirement: You wrote thank-you letters.

It's an older letter, of course, but I still love it. *hugs and cookies her*
