The half-days make sense if you use them for exams. We do our final exams in the morning, so you have:

Monday: 8 AM exam, 10 AM exam
Tuesday: Reading day (like in college)
Wednesday: 8 AM exam, 10 AM exam
Thursday: 8 AM exam, 10 AM exam

If they're just normal days, though, it makes no sense whatsoever.
