When I went to the Great Sand Dunes as a child, we always brought some flattened cardboard boxes to use as sleds. Sand sledding is fun! Though I imagine it's less fun at those temperatures.

...I should go back to the sand dunes at some point now that I'm a grownup. Last time I was there, it was the School Trip from Hell and I had pinkeye the whole time.
